Marquetry: the fine art of wood inlay. After the design is created it is tweaked into a fine line graphic drawing. I decide on the wood combinations (and mother-of-pearl, web turquoise, stone). The veneers and other materials are cut with many tools. The pieces are adhered with wood cement to an MDF board. I sand the pieces for a smooth finish then press to give even pressure. The pieces are finished with an acrylic urethane (lacquer) and a semi-gloss finish. The frames are made of maple or cherry.
I was always into the arts from my youth - art and music. I began doing marquetry, with friends, in my studio San Francisco while attending art school. I've been doing it for over 45 years. I design an image and then select the woods; cut and inlay and finish by gluing, sanding and applying a lacquer. I am inspired by nature and its' enormous beauty.
