BEESWAX CANDLES, HONEY OATMEAL SOAP, and BEESWAX WRAPS
I’m a beekeeper and candle maker who makes honey-oatmeal soap and designs beeswax candles hand-cast from molds of vintage bottles and glass.
They are molds I create myself in liquid silicone, a technique common in prop-making for theater arts, using antique bottles I chose for their interesting backgrounds: vintage elixirs, tonics, and perfume; milk creamers, toiletries, and opium. My soap has the soothing qualities of oatmeal (made with hand-ground steel-cut oats) and the healing properties of honey (antibacterial). The beeswax wraps are made with recycled cloth, wax, pine resin, and jojoba oil to replace plastic wrap with a more sustainable, antibacterial reusable alternative.
Because I’m a journalist and novelist by day, I couldn’t help researching the backgrounds of the bottles, and have found the most extraordinary people and stories associated with these 19th century bottles. Each candle comes with a story tag, representing early apothecaries, family farmers, and entrepreneurs. Many of the bottles are popular for the themes they represent: Sisterhood, suffragettes, family farms, a landmark gay rights lawsuit.
