I carve native and invasive trees into pepper mills, bowls, and art pieces. The wood comes from my land in Vermont and neighbors who are cutting down trees. I design pieces around the wood I get, rather than sourcing wood to satisfy my designs. Thus, a rarely make the same thing twice. You will find classy, functional home goods in my collection as well as decorative, three-dimensional sculptural work.
I started carving trees in 2007 with a focus on lathe work. Once I started carving trees, I discovered how beautiful wood grain is when exposed in the round, rather than flat boards. Each time I begin a new project I focus on exposing balanced grain patterns, knots, and otherwise discarded portions of trees. There's nothing sweeter than taking a discarded piece of tree and turning it into something gorgeous.
