Cathy Young is a Vermont-born artist and goldsmith whose work blends bold design with a deep appreciation for the natural world. She first discovered her creative instincts at home under the guidance of her mother, Mary Young, a skilled craftswoman who encouraged her love of handmade art. After a successful 24-year career with IBM, Cathy returned to her creative roots. What began in 2000 with a simple act of stringing pearls for her wedding party quickly grew into a lifelong passion for jewelry making. In 2011, she chose to follow that passion fully, retiring from IBM to train as a goldsmith. From her studio in Milton, Vermont, Cathy draws inspiration from the area’s remote beauty, abundant wildlife, and ever-changing landscape. She is especially drawn to freshwater pearls and natural gemstones—their coolness, texture, and rich variety of colors and patterns. Her work highlights the inherent beauty of each stone while creating pieces that feel wonderful on the body. Cathy’s approach to metalsmithing is rooted in curiosity and craftsmanship. She loves the process of forming metal, feeling how it moves, and shaping it into pieces that are both distinctive and wearable. Grateful for the path that brought her here, she creates each piece with the hope that the joy she feels in her studio is carried forward to the people who wear her work.
