Kitunga (Baskets in Swahili) Fashion consists of Congolese baskets made out of Raffia.
Raffia is used to make the interior of the baskets, it is woven by hand. Then, depending on the style, fabric or recycled material is added to the raffia's outer part, which is done by machine.
All the baskets feature a drawstring however, some styles have a zipper instead. The baskets are available in small, medium, and large. People love them.
I am originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I moved to the United States, Vermont in 2004 due to political conflicts in my country. I lived in a village where making baskets was one of the most common activities performed mostly by women. Making baskets was at the same time a way of making money and a hobby. In 2020, when Covid happened, I spent a lot of time at home with my mother. My mother taught me about the baskets and how to make them.
